Abstract
INDEX: a case-based reasoning approach of content-based indexing for design R.E. Oxman Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning Technion Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel ABSTRACT Precedent-Based Design (PBD) is introduced as a potential research area in Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) in design. In PBD, computerized libraries of design precedents provide problem solution principles as a basis of reasoning in current design situations. Indexing is identified as a research issue and its role in PBD is elaborated. Distinction is drawn between precedent representation and index representation. Models of index representation are developed on the basis of analysis of performance in implemented systems. Content indexing is introduced as an indexing technique for design precedent libraries. INDEX is a design indexing scheme which supports cross-contextual reminding through the use of high-level abstraction categories. MEMORABILIA is a computerized library of design precedents in the
