Abstract
A knowledge-based system for valuation and consultation on machine assemblies during design for configuration S.K. Lambrou & A.J. Dentsoras Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Patras, 26010, Patra, Greece ABSTRACT A knowledge-based system is presented for valuation and consultation during early design for configuration of mechanical parts to form axisymmetric assemblies. The system permits the definition of each part as a combination of user-defined subparts. By adopting an abstract primitive formalism for the classification and characterization of every subpart, it uses established formal topological categories to reason about the obtainable fitting. The valuation process is interrelated with consultation facilities that help the designer to make a desirable fitting attainable. INTRODUCTION Application of Intelligent Knowledge-based Systems in
