Abstract
The configuration of automobile manufacturing plants using FAKIR M. Fuernsinn & C. Meyer INPRO GmbH, Nurnberger Strasse 68/69, D-1000 Berlin 30, Germany ABSTRACT The expert systems currently used in industry are often unpopular with their users because they are technology-centered. A different approach is needed. The focus of attention in future developments should be shifted from methods to user problems and needs. We call these new systems "intelligent assistance systems". FAKIR is a typical example of intelligent assistance providing support for the costing of automobile assembly plants. INTRODUCTION New aims for expert system technology Expert systems are the product of considerable research and development effort in the field of artificial intelligence. In view of the fact that applications of artificial intelligence so far have no especially convincing practical success to demonstrate, it is perfectly reasonable to ask the reason why. Responsibility for the so-called "crisis"
