Abstract
In August 1994 an international workshop of invited environmental educators and practitioners met in New Zealand, organised by AEESEAP with the support and encouragement of UNESCO and the WFEO, to discuss the nature of environmental engineering education and its strategic needs. The paper outlines the principal findings of the workshop, particularly focusing on the need for all engineers to be environmentally educated. It goes on to show that in significant ways the need to relate to the environment has helped clarify a requirement to reform engineering education in a very fundamental way, calling for, for example, an emphasis on deep learning and systems thinking. 1 Introduction In 1994 an invited workshop of engineering educators was held in Christchurch, New Zealand, organised by the Association for Engin
