Abstract
Agenda 21, an action plan for sustainable development arising from the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, has important implications upon environmental studies provision within engineering curricula. This paper reviews the concept of sustainable development and the themes of Agenda 21 appropriate to the education and training of engineers at tertiary level. On the basis of a brief survey comments are made on the availability of environmental courses within the United Kingdom and associated policies which emphasise the international and ethical dimensions of sustainable development. From the evidence assembled it is concluded that, to a large extent, these themes have yet to emerge within engineering curricula as components of integrated study programmes. 1 Introduction It is eight years since
