Abstract

In the last years the growing environmental and sanitary impact of road transport and the connected growing costs has gave new impulse to ship transport. Ships activities grow, while reduce the global impact of transport, cause new environmental problems in port areas. In the paper the need for a global approach to port environment in the frame of sustainable development was introduced. The sources of pollution from ships, from port activity other than ships and from industrial activities in port areas with reference to air, water, soil, waste and noise are analyzed. Diffusion and/or propagation models are reviewed. Finally, technologies for reducing environmental impact are analyzed.
