Abstract
The port of Barcelona registered in the year 1999 an amount of 9204 ship entrances. 36,7% were Spanish and 63,3% foreign and about 40% under Flag of Convenience. On the other side, it was taken a sample of 992 vessels (about 10% of the total entrances) and analysed the composition of their crews, with the following result The largest number of seafarers are coming from the Philippines: about = 21% and all the seafarers coming from poor countries add 64,5%. Regarding composition of crews, Masters and Chief Engineers are mostly coming from Western Europe. The rest of the crews (officers, petty officers and ratings), aside the important number of Spanish and Italian, because of the ferry boats, are coming from the Philippines, Eastern Europe and a large number of different countries all
