Sun^ ^Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario Canada ^Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Simon Eraser University, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ABSTRACT The elements used in the standard boundary element method sur- rounding the crack tip are modified to resemble the inverse square root singularity. This modification results in the introduction of the stress intensity factor associated with linear elastic fracture mechan- ics. An additional constraint equation is needed to compensate for the stress intensity factor degree of freedom. As a benchmark problem, the double edge crack under mode I loading is investigated.
