Im* "Agency for Defense Development, Yuseong 305-600, Seoul, Korea ^Department of Mechanical Engineering, KAIST, Yuseong ABSTRACT A method is presented for calculating the failure strengths and failure modes of composite structures containing a mechanically fastened hole for materials exhibiting nonlinear elastic behavior. The effects of fastener elasticity, clearance and friction on the stresses around the hole edge are considered. An efficient numerical procedure is developed for the solution of the two-dimensional contact problems with Coulomb friction between the fastener and the hole based on a complementarity problem formulation. The nonlinear analysis is composed of the combination of Lagrangian formulation of the contact problem, the nonlinear shear stress-shear strain relation in each ply and the nonlinear failure criterion.
