Abstract

Hirata Department of Chemical Engineering, Osaka University, Machikaneyama, Toyonaka 560, Japan ABSTRACT In order to investigate the effect of the ambient ammonia (NMg)) on the non-steady characteristics of the rain drop acidification by washout of sulphur dioxide (SOz(g)), a mathematical model for the rain acidification has been built. With this model the numerical simulation of the acid rain formation has been carried out by utilizing the finite element method. The simulation shows that the concentration of hydrogen ion in the rain drop decreases remarkably with increase of the ambient ammonia. That is, the ambient ammonia can neutralize the rain acidity. It, however, has been also disclosed that the total amount of the sulphur compound dissolved in the rain is increased with increase of the coexistent ambient ammonia. 1. INTR
