Abstract

The particulate emissions from vehicles have a great impact on human health and the environment. The mass and the size distribution of the particulate emissions are of interest both to the automotive industry and environment related sectors. The small particles under PM10, which remain suspended in the atmosphere for long periods of time, can be found in diesel as well as petrol exhausts. The size distributions of the particulate emissions have been investigated by using light scattering techniques and microscopy. The distributions of particulate emissions can be directly related to the operational conditions and engine performance of a diesel engine. A preliminary comparison of particle samples taken from both diesel and petrol exhausts has been made. The physical forms of diesel and petrol exhau
