Abstract

The types of synoptic weather systems leading to elevated ambient pollutant gas concentrations, and high bulk deposition acidity in Hong Kong have been identified. Other contributing factors such as windspeed, wind direction and rainfall amount are also discussed. The average ambient pollutant gas concentrations in Hong Kong are listed together with those in other Asian and Australian megacities. The comparison of the compositions of bulk deposition and ambient aerosol provides an assessment of the under- cloud washout processes. Furthermore, the influence of local factors upon the composition of bulk deposition is manifested by the considerable variation over the small Territory of Hong Kong. Preliminary studies of dry deposition fluxes have also been made. 1 Introduction Although Hong Kong has the small land a
