Abstract
At calm days during weekend the Hvalfjordur Tunnel sometimes closes for a while for traffic due to air pollution. The two years old tunnel is 5,8 km long with one lane in each direction and goes 165 m under sea level. The daily traffic consist of 3-4 thousand vehicles but at holidays season during the weekend the traffic is much more heavier and can go up to 7600 vehicles. The main traffic flow start 7 o'clock in the morning and reduces at midnight. Peak hours are between 4 and 7 p.m. and are about 35 % of the daily flow. Electronic solid state sensors (NOx) control the ventilation system which blows from north to south along the tunnel. Car drivers complain of mist while driving through the tunnel.
