Abstract
Ozone Measurements in Presence of Cumulus Clouds with a Combined DIAL / Raman DIAL A contribution to subproject TOR-2 V. Matthias and J. Bosenberg Max-Planck-InstitutfurMeteorologie, Bundesstr. 55, D-20146 Hamburg, Germany Introduction Cumulus clouds often appear during ozone episodes under fair weather conditions. Recent model investigations (Lelieveld and Crutzen, 1990 and Matthijsen, 1997) show that clouds have an effect on the ozone density. Ozone production rates are lowered in the cloud since important ozone precursors go from the gaseous phase into the aqueous phase. Liquid phase reactions are completely different. Additionally, radiation effects are changed by the clouds. Accurate ozone measurements in presence of clouds are difficult to perform. Free flying ozone sondes are not able to give the temporal development of the ozone density around the cloud, tethered balloon sondes don't give values at different h
