Abstract

The capability to observe tropospheric trace gases from space is in its infancy. Already, however, spaceborne measurements have provided a unique perspective of the degree to which pollution has perturbed the natural distributions of tropospheric ozone and carbon monoxide. Re-examination of existing satellite data sets have also recently supplied the scientific community with observations of atmospheric particulate matter from widespread biomass burning and other natural and anthropogenic sources. Within the next five years, measurements from several satellites will provide considerably more space-derived information about the distribution of several trace gases and additional insight into the global distribution of some other key precursors to tr
