Abstract

Planned Investigations of the Formation and Properties of Liquid and Solid CN in a Large Aerosol Chamber A contribution to subproject PROCLOUD H Bunz, S. Schafer, O Mohler, H Saathoff and U. Schurath Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, Institut fur Meteorologie und Klimaforschung, Postfach 3640, D-76021 Karlsruhe, Germany Introduction In the atmosphere, cloud droplets typically freeze as a result of heterogeneous nucleation. In the absence of ice nuclei, cloud droplets may supercool to temperatures of-35 °C or less until homogeneous freezing occurs. We intend to investigate ice cloud formation by first studying homogeneous ice nucleation in the temperature range of-30 °C to -40 °C, using a large evacuable/coolable chamber. The method for initiating ice clouds in the precooled chamber will be further cooling by adiabatic expansion. This procedure has been successful in significantly smaller laborator
