Abstract

A Model for Organic Surface Films on Aerosol Particles and Cloud Droplets A contribution to subproject PROCLOUD W Seidl Fraunhofer-Institutfur Atmospharische Umweltforchung, Kreuzeckbahnstrafie 19, D-82467 Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany Introduction Organic substances with polar groups are enriched at the air-water-interface. They can form surface films which lower the surface tension and may hinder the transport of water vapour and trace gases through the interface. This affects the physical and chemical properties of cloud droplets and humid aerosol particles. A model will be developed which describes surface films formed by w-alkanoic acids. In combination to a cloud model and a model for humid aerosol particles, the surface film model can be used to investigate the effects of surface films. Requirements for the model The model must describe the relations between c, the bulk concen
