Abstract
An FTIR Study of Soot and Mineral Dust Model Compounds and Selected Reactions with Nitrogen Oxides A contribution to subproject CMD U. Kirchner, C Borensen, V. Scheer and R. Vogt Ford Forschungszentrum Aachen GmbH, Dennewartstr. 25, D-52068 Aachen, Germany Introduction Black carbon and mineral dust particles are considered to serve as heterogeneous reaction sites in the atmosphere (Dentener et a!., 1996; Lary et al,, 1997 and Hauglustaine et #/., 1996). Their reactivity and potential catalytic activity are expected to depend on the nature of the functional chemical groups covering the surface of the particles. Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectroscopy is able to serve as a qualitative and quantitative analytical tool (Vogt et al., 1994 and 1996), and has been used to characterize the surface of soot and mineral dust components and to investigate surface reactions with n
