Abstract
Catalysed Aqueous S(IV) Autoxidation: Iron-Manganese Synergism A contribution to subproject CMD M. Poznic, I. Grgic and G. Bercic National Institute of Chemistry, Hajdrihova 19, P.O.B. 3430, SI-1001 Ljubljana, Slovenia Introduction Autoxidation of S(IV)-oxides catalysed by transition metal ions (e.g. Mn(II), Fe(III), Fe(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Ni(II)) has been the subject of a large number of laboratory studies (Brandt, 1995). Catalytic activity of metal ions varies significantly depending on the selected experimental conditions, especially on the oxidation state of the metal ion, on the concentration range and pH. The highest catalytic activity has mostly been found in the presence of Fe(III) and Mn(II). A further complicating aspect is the synergistic effect shown by a combination of metal ions (e.g. Fe(III)/Cu(II), Fe(III)/Mn(II), Mn(II)/Cu(II), Co(II)/Mn(II)) (Coiche
