Abstract
The Reaction of S(V with some Degradation Products of a-pinene in Aqueous Solution. A contribution to subprqject CMD G.V. Buxton, G.A. Salmon and J.E. Introduction Terpenoid hydrocarbons are among the most common organic species emitted into the atmosphere by biogenic sources with a globally averaged emission rate of 550 Tg Yr ^ (Zimmerman et al., 1978). Recently the reactions of a-pinene that occur with the predominant oxidising species present in the gaseous phase (namely OH, Og and NO%) have been the subject of much study (Atkinson, 1997, Beradt et al., 1987, Hankola et al, 1994). However, the fate of the fraction of these biogenic species that are incorporated into the atmospheric aqueous phase and their interactions with important S(IV) free-radical oxidants has received little attention.
