Abstract
The Reactivity of Chlorine Atoms in Aqueous Solution A contribution to subproject CMD George V. Buxton, Mark Bydder and G Arthur Salmon Cookridge Radiation Research Centre, University of Leeds, , IWa LS76 Introduction The Cl" atom is an extremely reactive species which may be produced in cloud water by the reaction of S(V~ with chloride (McElroy, 1990). In the presence of chloride, the equilibrium Cl- + Cl" <-ยป el:'" (1) is formed with KI = 1.4 x 10* dm^ moP' (Buxton, et al, 1998). Taking [CP] to be 10"* mol dm ^ in cloud water, it may be seen that C^' is the predominant form of radical chlorine in the atmospheric aqueous phase. Perhaps for this reason, many studies have been made of the reactions of %• (Hasegawa, et al, 1978) whilst there has been little done on the Cl- atom. However, previous work (Gilbert, et al, 1988, and Buxton, et al, 1998) has showKeywords
