Abstract

The effect of a longitudinal magnetic field on fluid flow and heat transfer of moving GTA weld pool with experimental and FE methods Y .B. Li, Z.Q. Lin, G.L. Chen & Y .S. Zhang School of Mechanical Engineering, Shanghai Jiaotong University, China Abstract During Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) process, the behaviors of the weld pool can be affected by a magnetic field parallel to the arc centerline and produced by a hollow cylindrical coil excitated by a constant-current power source. Some experiments showed applying a magnetic field like this would cause annular flow of liquid metal and produce significant effects on heat transfer and melting and solidification of weld metal. In the paper, using multicoupled analysis fimction of FE code ANSYS, current density, magnetic field, fluid flow and heat transfer in three-dimensional moving weld pool were systematically analyzed to reveal effects of longitudinal magnetic field on moving GTA weld pool. Results showed under the control of external longi
