Abstract

The paper examines some typical construction elements that may be of Mediterranean architecture, such as arches, simples vaults and stone supports, examining their component materials, durability, construction concept and stress patterns. The analysis of all the elements of ancient building work, in terms of both methodology and intervention techniques, produces the guidelines for a correct conservation strategy. 1 The conception of construction: forms and materials For millennia architecture was created without resort to calculations or models of the mechanical behaviour of building materials. Constant human endeavour assembled the materials to hand in nature in elementary and repetitive forms which responded to the needs of human society.
