Abstract
Since lightweight tension structures are so different from traditional buildings in terms of material, technology and appearance, they can provide an interesting alternative to more traditional ways of covering. In combination with historical buildings, the special features of both structures are highlighted. In excavation site management, protecting the workers, sheltering the uncovered artefacts and covering the whole site when the work is (temporarily) terminated have to be considered. In each case the shelter needed will take on different forms and serve slightly different functions. This can lead to the use of different sheltering techniques and eventually to waste of material.
