Abstract
In this paper some results of an investigation on the Hyparschale Magdeburg (name of a hyperbolic paraboloid shell located in Magdeburg, Germany) will be pre- sented. The reinforced concrete shell with a thickness of 7 cm covers an area of 48 x 48 m without any support. In the first step the quality of the concrete of the shell and the columns as well as the condition of the prestessing steel of the tension girder was examined. With this knowledge the safety of the building could be ensured using some minor safety devices. In parallel the shell was recalculated (i.e. checking up the as-built structure) using the FE-method and it could be shown that the requirements of the ultimate limit state are fulfilled even taking into account
