Abstract

The construction industry is increasingly involved in the survey, assessment, alteration or refurbishment of existing structures. This is due to limited space and funds for new construction, the disruption costs associated with new build, a greater environmental awareness and a cultural desire to maintain ancient and historic structures. Theoretical models of civil engineering structures (such as bridges, dams, towers, domes, historical monuments, commercial facilities) are essential for assessment and for the design of alterations. For older structures these models often do not exist. Where they do exist (based on visual survey for example) they are often inaccurate. For newer structures "as-built" information often does not accurately reflect the work done on site. Given the shortcomings in design data and surveys as a basis for structural models, it is c
