Abstract
Transport has an important role in the social and economic life of our country but, as it depends almost totally on fossil fuel, it has a considerable energy conservation and environmental impact. In the paper, we discuss some innovative solutions produced by the CNR-PFT2 working group for the control and reduction of pollution levels. The CNR-PFT2 is the second special Project on Transport Research founded by the Italian National Research Council. It began in September 1991 and is to be concluded by the end of 1999. It provides, at national level, a meeting of working groups with different backgrounds and experiences in order to develop a well defined research programme in terms of contents, cost and time scale.
