Abstract
The CAIO-Method is based on FEM and copies biological fibre orientation in order to minimise shear stresses within orthotropic or multi-layer composite material structures. Tests on specimen of fibre reinforced material showed that structures with optimised materials directions bear higher loads than uniaxial ones. It was evident, that the mechanism of failure changes from shear-failure of the uniaxial to exceeding of the ultimate tensile strength of the optimised specimen. Within the latest version of CAIO it is also possible to calculate fibre orientations in three dimensional volume- and shell elements. 1. Introduction CAIO is one of three algorithms which copy biological strategies. These meth- ods are rea
