Abstract
Sustainable transport, environmental quality and social structure J.D. Tabara Institut d'Estudis Socials Avanqats, Consell Superior d'Investigacions Cientifiques, Egipciaques, 15, 08001 Barcelona, Spain This paper presents a theoretical framework that endeavours to help the understanding of the constraints and opportunities in achieving a sustainable urban transport system compatible with the maintenance of high environmental quality standards. It is argued that this will depend as much on technological improvements as on social and economic factors that are related to the structure of society, and in particular: a)Public perceptions of resources, environmental quality and degradation; b)Interests, values and lifestyles, that determine the existence of collective actions; c) Social structure of power, and specifically, how corporations succeed in controlling resources and imposing their perceptions and interests on the rest of the public.
