Abstract

This paper aims at analysing the role of signalling systems in determining the traffic capacity of a given railway line. Some signalling techniques that can be used to increase traffic capacity are described. Both analytical and computer- based approaches to identifying the relation between signalling system characteristics and traffic capacity are presented. A case study is also presented. 1 Introduction In most towns, building new metrorail systems is often unfeasible because of hard difficulties of economic and environmental nature. So, there is currently a growing interest in the possibility of utilising existing railway lines as effective urban transport systems. To this end, it is necessary to face various problems concerning traffic capacity of railway infrastru
