Abstract
The paper is composed of two stages of analysis ; urban transportation energy characteristics and energy reduction by residential decentralization. The study area is a local area in Japan including a core city. Firstly, energy rate by travel mode is shown and then transportation energy is estimated by trip purpose and travel mode. It proved that energy for work trips by car amounts 36% or more of the transportation energy in the area. Secondly, on analysis of modal split of work trips, the effect of residential decentralization on work trip energy is shown indirectly by estimating decrease/increase in total travel demand for work trip by car. 1 Introduction The authors are concerned with the effect of residential location on energy for work trips.
