Abstract
The Tower City concept - shelf-shaping megastructure for a city infrastructure to be built by mobile, robotized factories D.N. Bini, N.G. Bini Introduction Many experts predict that the world's population will reach 6 billion by the year 2050. With an approximate total world surface of 60,000,000 square miles (inclusive of seas, deserts and oceans) we will soon reach the very crowded population density of 100 persons per square mile. The "Tower City" project, conceived for a population of 600,000 inhabitants, was developed in response to a task set forth to the author by the Director of the Construction Division of a leading Japanese Corporation. Central to this task were serious concerns over the overflow of population and the indiscriminate urban expansions. The "Tower City" is a mile high super-structure designed to be built on unused portion of a shallow coastal shelf by means of a series of automated construction processes.
