Abstract
This paper is part of an extensive research program on non conventional materials, technology and structural forms supervised by the first author at PUC-Rio in Brasil since 1979. To cover a large space for permanent or temporary structures, without using many columns, space truss structures are the most optimum form. Beside this, the resistance and the form of bamboo are well suitable and economical for the construction of such structures. In the assembly of space structures the most difficult part is the joining of the elements. Different joints have been studied. The study of a joint using aluminium or steel plates and pin joints in bamboo is presented. The safe distance between the holes and to the extreme end of the bamboo pole is established using Finite Ele
