Abstract
. DSB Consult is planning and stepwise implementing a transition from a variety of proprietary single-disciplinary cad-systems to open systems following common standards and specifications operating on a common data model. Future design-systems must comply with the "OLE For Design and Modeling" standard, the engineering counterpart to the OLE-2 integration standard for office automation. Other standards like COM and ODBC will contribute to a truly open, highly customizable multi-vendor system environment. The paper presents the overall concept, the implementation strategy, experiences so far, and expectations for future efficiency and quality gains. European Context.
