Finding new designs for pressure tools using optimization methods which are based on the simulation of biological, growth F. Walther, A. Baumgartner, C. Matt heck Institut jur Materialforschung II, Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH, W-7500 Karlsruhe, Germany ABSTRACT A new layout procedure has been developed in the Kernforschungs- zentrum Karlsruhe, which transfers biological optimization mechanisms into the field of optimum design. SKO (Soft Kill Option) is a new tech- nique to find design proposals for given load cases and boundary con- ditions. The results are characterized by reduced weight and a relative- ly homogeneous distribution of the mechanical stresses. CAO (Com- puter Aided Optimization) is a method of shape optimization being able to improve the design of technical components in order to reduce existing notch stresses on the surface. Here both methods have been applied to develop and optimize new suspensions for a shell-shaped pressure tool which is us
