El-Sayed^ ^Department of Mechanical Engineering, University o/M^soi/rz, Co^m6m MO &52JJ, C/^A ^Department of Mechanical Engineering, Florida International University, Miami FL 33199, USA ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to present an integrated approach to structural design and optimization which integrates the tasks of geometric model preparation, design parameterization, design characterization, response analysis, sensitivity analysis, and optimization. The approach has been built around the commercial modeling package PATRAN and a developed integrated code for response analysis, sensitivity calculation and optimization. All data preparation and post-processing tasks can be performed from within the modeling software. Where possible, techniques for using existing functions have been developed.
