Abstract
Suitable numerical tools may help in assessing the need for struc- tural repair and choosing the most appropriate intervention tech- nique for historical buildings in earthquake prone zones. This is illustrated in the example of a stone block arcade supporting a masonry wall. 1 Introduction The advances in earthquake engineering in the different fields of structural mechanics do not yet include historical monuments. In fact, satisfactory analysis of this class of structures was not possible due to the incomplete characterization of the construction materials and the inadequate experimental facilities necessary to the calibra- tion of mathematical models. The recent construction of large testing facilities in Europe - the reaction
