Abstract
This paper deals with the evaluation of the seismic response of monumental structures composed of vertically stacked blocks, resting on deformable elastic foundation. The influence of the friction coefficient in the non-linear response of a realistically simulated structure with ten frictional interfaces and ten dynamic degrees of freedom is examined. The parameter being considered is the coefficient of friction ^ (0.2 to 0.3) at the sliding planes. 1 Introduction The main reasons for the investigation of the special structural characteristics of historical buildings (figure 1) are (a) the estimation of their seismic resistance as well as the prediction of their future integrity and (b) the estimation of the intensity of past destructive earthquakes from the permanent effects observed on them.
