Abstract

Sweden has been a wood-building country since pre-historic times. A large group of the remaining wooden structures consists of roof trusses in churches. They are therefore important bearers of information about traditional timber building techniques in different periods of our history. A short summary of the Swedish timber building tradition is given. The differences between the crafts- man tradition and the technological tradition are illuminated. A way to bridge the traditions using finite element modelling and analysis is proposed. As an ex- ample, a case study concerning the supports of the roof trusses in the church of Vaskinde, Sweden, is described. 1 Craftsman tradition and technologica
