Abstract
This report offers a historical synthesis of the scientific studies carried out during the nineteenth century on the statics of arches, vaults, and masonry domes. It wishes to pointing out the role that the history of scientific and constructive knowledge may play for a better understanding of the present theoretical debate on principles ruling both preservation and static rehabilitation. 1 Introduction The evocative and enigmatic image proposed by P.M.
