Abstract

The vertical directionality of ambient noise in shallow water is largely governed by the geo-acoustic structure of the seabed. A noise inversion algorithm has been developed, which allows the compressional and shear speeds of the bottom to be determined from the coherence function of the noise, as measured at two vertically aligned hydrophones in the water column. Such an inversion is possible because variations in the speed and attenuation of compressional and shear waves in the bottom have distinguishably different effects on the directional density function of the noise.
