Abstract

It is well documented that the direct solution of the primitive form of the shallow water equations ,SWE, by conventional Galerkin finite elements ,GFEM, fails and that the Generalized Wave Continuity formulation ,GWC, provides an alternative, that eliminates the numerical oscillations. The se- lection of the penalty parameter "G" for GWC must however be carefully adjusted to achieve both mass balance and noise control. In this paper, a method of solving the primitive SWE with a filter is presented. It is shown that the method controls numerical noise and is mass conservative. 1 Introduction The finite element solution of the shallow water equations has challenged re- searchers since the initial FEM formulations of the early 197CTs.
