Abstract
A model has been set up to solve for the tides and tidal currents in a region of the North Atlantic Ocean around Iceland. The model is based on the depth integrated, nonlinear shallow water equations, which are solved numerically using a staggered Galerkin finite element scheme on triangular elements. At the open boundaries the model is forced using results from Schwiderski's [4] global model. So far the model has been used to simulate the semi-diurnal M2 component of the tides. The results have been compared with tidal gauge measurements at a number of stations around Iceland and elsewhere, showing in general good agreement. Future plans for the model are to compute the complete astronomical tide, and be able to simulate actual tidal motions during particular periods of time anywhere within the mode
