Abstract
A study of the storm wave climate in Montevideo's coast is presented in this paper. A simple wave hindcast method, based on wind data, is used together with a numerical refraction-diffraction model. As a result of the study, the storm wave rose and the distribution function for extreme storm wave heights are determined. The calculated storm wave heights are compared against the available measured wave heights. 1 Introduction 1.1 Preliminaries Montevideo, capital of Uruguay, is located in the Rio de la Plata estuary. This estuary has a small depth but is very extense. Figure 1 shows the location of Montevideo, as well the bathymetric points used in this study. Montevideo's coastal promenade, since its construction nearly seventy years ago, has been a fundamental traff
