Abstract
A numerical model for the solution of wind-induced circulation and pollutant dispersion is presented herein. The finite element method was used for the numerical solution of the two-dimensional shallow water equations and the dispersion equation, in which the depth-average of the fluid velocities on the horizontal plane is considered. The split-time method was used for the integration of the shallow water equations, whereas the trapezoidal rule was employed for the solution of the dispersion equation. The model was used for the study of the wind-induced circulation and pollutant transport in the Gulf of Thermaikos located in Northern Greece.
