Abstract
On the economical importance of interfacing CAD and CFD V. Bertram" & J. Marzi* "Institut fur Schiffbau, University Hamburg, Germany ^Entwicklungszentrum fur Maritime und Industrielle Technik, Bremerhaven, Germany ABSTRACT Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is an important high-tech ele- ment in differentiation of West-European ship building. Extensive use of CFD by our ship yards depends on further substantial improvements of its cost-benefit ratio. Therefore research efforts should concentrate on the area that promises the most progress. This is currently the interface between CAD and CFD. CFD IS IMPORTANT AS CONTRIBUTION TO TECHNOLOGICAL DIFFERENTIATION Porter [1] identifies three basic competitive strategies for successful com- panies: 1. cost leadership 2. differentiation 3. focus on selective areas For West-European ship yards the first strategy option can be ruled out as production still contains a large amount of manual work.
