Fuller BUT Icons Ltd, Wallsend Research Station, Wallsend, INTRODUCTION For most of its recorded history ship design and construction has been perceived as a "low technology" craft based enterprise dominated by the build of the hull. The leading performance parameter was to provide reliable transport to time and at least cost, targeting propulsive efficiency. Notwithstanding the random and aggressive nature of the sea, structural strength and all aspects of seaworthiness was left to loss prevention by regulation and the concept of the 'insurable' risk.
