Louhenkilpi* ^ University of Jyvdskyld, Department of Mathematics, Seminaarinkatu 15, SF-40100 Jyvaskyla, Finland ^Helsinki University of Technology, Institution of Process Finland ABSTRACT In the present paper we consider the problems associated with the cali- bration of the numerical simulation model used in the real-time process control. The aim of the control system is to adjust the spray cooling water flow amounts in the continuous steel casting process so, that the thermal requirements of the steel will be met. The numerical simulation model is based on the parabolic partial dif- ferential equation for which the correct estimation of the boundary con- ditions is of crucial importance.
