Abstract
One-dimensional solidification model has been formulated for a problem of ice formation at the cooled top boundary, below which vigorous free con- vection ensues in the water due to the bottom boundary temperature being kept at a higher value than the solidification temperature. In the course of nondimensionalization of the time-evolution equation which describes the growth of solid phase, several nondimensional parameters governing the so- lidification process are identified. Overall time evolution characteristics of the solid phase are explained in connection with t
