Abstract
A semi-infinite crack in an elastic plate with finite or infinite width, which is subject to an impact loading on the crack surfaces, is analyzed by the Boundary Element Method. The acceleration and deceleration behaviors of the crack and the measurement of the fast crack propagation toughness KID by the caustic method are simulated. It is shown that the 'measured' KID depends apparently on the crack acceleration and the shape of specimen, when the the dynamic stress intensity factorK(Z, v) and/or the crack speed v changes rapidly. The dependence is explained based on the numerical results that the K(t, v) controlled field does not develop enough to cover the location of the initial curve of caustics. 1 Introduction
